Pile #3 · Absolutely pointless

The most pointless websites on the internet, with one job and no reason to do it

A pointless website does exactly one thing and that thing achieves nothing. It answers a question nobody asked, or it spins a sandwich, or it wraps a small dog in a rug. There is no second feature. There is no upgrade path.

That makes them perfect for wasting time: nothing to learn, nothing to sign up for, nothing to finish. This list of pointless websites also holds a few things we built ourselves, including a loading screen that loads nothing and a button that gets increasingly upset when you press it. We consider them some of our finest work.

  1. 🗑 Pointlessest. 2024

A million shared checkboxes. The internet checked them all.

A giant grid of checkboxes that everyone on the internet shared at once. Strangers ticked them together until every single box was checked. You can still play with them alone.

  2. Orb.Farm

    RARE RELIC

    🌀 Weird

A tiny aquatic ecosystem you nurture in a glass orb.

Build a little underwater world out of sand, water, algae, bacteria and fish, then watch oxygen and carbon dioxide balance themselves. Or fail to. The fish will let you know.

  3. ❓ ??????Made in the junkyard

A dramatic loading screen for something important.

A progress bar promises something important is loading. It takes its time. It builds suspense. You will want to be there when it finishes.

  4. 🌀 Weird

Empty white windows pile up on top of each other.

Rafaël Rozendaal’s artwork of blank, shadowed rectangles stacked across the screen, like every tab you forgot to close, with nothing in any of them.

  5. 🗑 Pointless

Competitive checkbox ticking. Go for gold.

A series of timed events where the only sport is clicking checkboxes as fast and precisely as you can. It gets more intense than it has any right to.

  6. Crouton

    UNCOMMON

    🗑 Pointless

A white page. A single crouton in the corner.

The entire website is one small picture of a crouton, tucked into the top-left corner of an empty white page. It has been like this for a very long time. It does not need to change.

  7. 🗑 Pointless

Draw a circle. Get a percentage. Try again forever.

By Neal Agarwal. Draw a circle around a dot and the page scores how perfect it is. You will get close. You will not get a hundred. You will try again.

  8. 🌀 Weird

Build little worlds out of emoji and rules.

A grid of trees that can catch fire, spread and regrow. Change the emoji and the rules and simulate forests, zombies or whatever you invent.

  9. 🌀 Weird

An ASCII horse whose legs never end.

A horse drawn in text characters. Scroll down to reach its hooves. Keep scrolling. The legs keep going. The horse is fine with this.

  10. 🌀 Weird

    Bands of colour fall forever.

A single-page artwork by Rafaël Rozendaal: layers of flat colour slide down the screen, endlessly. It is the internet equivalent of watching rain from a window.

  11. 😂 Funny

Hunt an invisible cow using only sound.

Somewhere on the screen there is a cow you cannot see. Move your cursor and a voice gets louder as you get closer. When you find it, it lets you know.

  12. Into Time

    UNCOMMON

    🌀 Weirdest. 2010

A slow gradient from red into deep blue.

A colour field by Rafaël Rozendaal that fades from red to midnight blue. It feels like staring at a sunset that has been compressed into a rectangle.

  13. 🗑 Pointless

Hover over circles until they split into a koala.

Start with one big circle. Brush it with your cursor and it splits into four. Keep going until the circles resolve into a picture of a koala. Extremely satisfying, extremely pointless.

  14. 🌀 Weird

A hand with freshly painted nails.

A single illustrated hand, fingers held up to show off a manicure. It is a quiet, strange little art site that asks nothing of you.

  15. 🌀 Weird

A checkerboard of circles waiting for your cursor.

A black and white checkerboard with little circles, from Rafaël Rozendaal. The title gives you the instructions, and the page rewards following them.

  16. Paint Toys

    UNCOMMON

  19. Sandspiel

    UNCOMMON

  20. 😂 Funny

Blow a billionaire’s fortune on burgers, yachts and sports teams.

You get an absurd budget and a shopping list that goes from a Big Mac to a cruise ship. Spending it all turns out to be weirdly difficult. The receipt at the end is its own punchline.

  21. 🌀 Weird

Free hugs from strangers, delivered by video.

Real people recorded themselves hugging the camera so you could feel slightly better. It is surprisingly effective and completely unnecessary, which is the best kind of useful.

  22. 💾 Old Internetest. 2012

One button. It throws you somewhere useless. Sound familiar?

A single big button that sends you to a random pointless website. It is one of the ancestors of this junkyard, and we salute it from a safe distance.

  23. This Is Sand

    UNCOMMON

    🌀 Weird

Pour digital sand into little layered landscapes.

Pick colours and pour grains of sand onto the screen, building layers like one of those souvenir bottles. Nothing is saved for any purpose. It just looks nice.

  24. 🗑 Pointless

An endless maze stitched together from player-made mazes.

Players build maze tiles and they all connect into one enormous game board. The global stats count pac-dots in numbers too large to read out loud.

    🌀 Weirdest. 2014

A soft gradient that asks nothing and answers nothing.

    COMMON JUNK

  28. 😂 Funny

    Content-free. Share-maximised.

  38. Heeeeeeeey

    COMMON JUNK

    😂 Funny

A website that says one word. It commits to that word far longer than anyone asked it to. Turn your sound on, or don’t. It will not change the outcome.

  39. 🌀 Weird

  40. I Am Awesome

    COMMON JUNK

    🗑 Pointless

A whole domain dedicated to confirming one fact.

The page contains two words of plain text and nothing else. No styling, no images, no second opinion. Someone registered a domain to state a fact and then left.

  41. Is It Christmas?

    COMMON JUNK

    🗑 Pointless

The classic puzzle game with every unnecessary square removed. You have one decision to make. Choose wisely, or at least quickly.

  47. 😂 Funny

Type a password. Get judged for it.

A password box that reads what you type and responds with increasingly personal disappointment. It does not protect anything. It just has opinions about your choices.

  48. Pixels Fighting

    COMMON JUNK

    🗑 Pointless

  49. Pug in a Rug

    COMMON JUNK

Questions nobody needed answered

What is the most pointless website ever made?

A strong candidate is any site that answers a single yes-or-no question. We also nominate our own Wait For Nothing, which is extremely committed to its premise.

Why do people make pointless websites?

Because it is fun, because a domain name was available, and because the internet used to be mostly this. Pointless sites are often a developer’s side project or a one-afternoon joke that outlived everyone’s expectations.

What are good pointless websites to waste time on?

Start with Pug in a Rug, Rotating Sandwiches and Is It Christmas?, then press our Do Not Press button. You will lose more time than you planned.
